Appalachian Death Care & Grief Tending

Grief is not meant to be carried alone. Our ancestors knew this. For generations, community grief tending was regarded as both normal and sacred. We have all but lost these ways in our modern society, where grief is often treated as something to be fixed or gotten over, so that we can “get back to normal” as soon as possible. The Art of Grief Tending is an introduction to the wisdom traditions of sacred witnessing, holding space, community rituals, and music as medicine. Let us remember how to be human together, how to walk alongside one another through times of loss and sorrow, and how to reclaim the joys and connection that can be found in community.
